A subtle and delicious sweet agaric, with anise-like fragrance and firm flesh. I have only found this mushroom once, in a forested area of the Santa Cruz Mountains. It resembles other woodland agarics except that it bruises a tawny orange color on the cap. It has a skirtlike anulus, brown spores, gills colored light grey in young specimens, turning brown with age. The cap of the specimen shown here was already darkened from handling and dryness. (I didn't have a camera with me when I found it, so the photo is not in situ, and I had already trimmed the base of the stem.)
